ESR 04 - Vanessa Wyrwoll
Short biography
Vanessa Wyrwoll received both her Bachelor and Master's Degrees in Engineering Physics at the Carl Von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany, where she completed her studies in September 2017. She specialized in the field of Medical Physics and Acoustics, with a particular focus on high energetic radiation physics. During this time, she got the opportunity to work as a research assistant at the Pius Hospital in Oldenburg. Her Bachelor's thesis 'Monte Carlo simulation of space based radiation detectors' and Master's thesis 'Validation of flux models to characterize the radiation environment in space based on current Rosetta-data' were written in collaboration with Sascha Lüdeke (ESR01) and the European Space Agency (ESA). Both were focused on investigations concerning the Standard Radiation Environment Monitor (SREM) installed onboard the Rosetta mission.
Why did you apply for a RADSAGA position?
My application to a position as an ESR working in the RADSAGA project was initiated by the very stimulating project description, training and network. It offers the opportunity to improve my knowledge about radiation effects on electronics while working together with the leading scientists and taking part in a variety of trainings. The possibility of working in several radiation facilities with state-of-the-art equipment represents also an important and interesting part of my PhD as ESR4. Based at CERN and being a student of the University of Oslo, the aim of my work is focused on the emerging radiation effects mainly caused by singly charged particles. Also, further investigations regarding the interaction of the aforementioned particles with materials will be carried out in this project.
What are your future goals? How will RADSAGA help you fulfill them?
One of my future goal is to work in an academic frame and to pass my experience and knowledge, gained during my time working in the RADSAGA project, to other people. For example, inspiring students in the role of a professor to enhance their passion of science would be great. To do so, RADSAGA offers the perfect possibility with its international working environment, trainings, travels and possibilities.
